The History of WICR

WICR began operating in 1962 with ten watts of power. In the early days, the station featured a variety of programs focusing on rock and jazz music. In the late 70's, WICR began offering classical music programs during drive time.  A partnership with Classical Music Indy still exists today!

In 1982, WICR was granted an increase in effective radiated power to 2,500 watts, later to be increased to 5,000 watts as a licensed non-commercial, full-power Class B radio station.  The combination of 5,000 watts of power and an antenna height of 1,000 feet give WICR the coverage area equal to that of a 30,000-watt FM station.

In 1983, WICR began broadcasting from remodeled studio facilities in Buxton Hall.  In 1999, WICR moved to the Sease Wing of Krannert Memorial Library.  The state-of-the-art facilities feature a master control studio, talk studio, news studio, two production studios, and offices.  In 2005, WICR moved into its new state of the art facilities in the new addition of Esch Hall.  It features the air studio, talk and news studios, along with 5 production studios.
